Courses and Academies

Abingdon Sports and Leisure are delighted to be able to offer extensive, high quality courses and qualifications for the public to enjoy. This includes the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, a high performance rugby camp, swimming, climbing, squash and much more. These courses provide an opportunity for participants to develop new or existing skills in an environment designed and equipped to an exceptionally high standard. The courses are run by qualified, experienced and DBS-checked coaches and staff.

All of our Courses and Academies for both adults and juniors can be found listed below, along with the online registration form you can fill in to reserve your booking. All bookings are on a first come, first serve basis so we advise that you book early to avoid disappointment.

Junior Squash Course

Boost flexibility and sprint speed, improve hand-eye coordination, develop the strength and power of muscles, and help with concentration and mental strength
on this fully instructed course.

Age range: 5-15 years

Sunday mornings:

(Beginners) 9.00am – 10.00am

(Improvers) 10.00am – 11.00am

(Advanced) 11.00am – 12.00pm

Course fee: £40 for six-week tuition

Adult Squash Course

Great if you are just starting to play squash, or getting back into the game after a long break. Perhaps you have not played since you were at school and would like to play again and meet some new people, this fully instructed course is for you.

Age range: 16+ years.

Course fee: £50 for six-week tuition

Monday evenings:

7.00pm – 8.00pm

8.00pm – 9.00pm

Junior Climbing – Four Week Course

Girls and boys aged 5-15 years

Our junior sessions are group based activities, designed to give an introduction into the world of climbing. Whilst focusing on enjoyment, your instructor will teach climbing techniques and basic safety skills required to progress in this sport. Based over a four-week course, there are beginners’ and improvers’ sessions designed to target those new to the sport, or those wanting to brush up on their technique.

(Please note, the session on Saturday 29 September will be in the afternoon, due to Abingdon School Open Day. Sessions on this day will be available to book from 1.30pm-3.00pm, 3.00pm-4.30pm & 4.30pm-6.00pm)

Saturday 1 December – Saturday 22 December 2018

(Advanced) 9.00-10.30am

(Beginners or young climbers) 10.30-12.00pm

(Intermediate) 12.00-1.30pm

£65 per four weeks. Each session is 1.5 hours. Places must be booked in advance.

Adult Climbing – Four Week Course

Aged 16+ years.

Aimed at beginners and improver’s, the course will work at your level to develop your confidence and climbing skills, with a particular focus on safe technique. Qualified instructors with all safety equipment provide guidance and tuition through this four week  course. Our novice course will introduce you to rope work, rock climbing techniques, safe fitting and use of equipment.

Holiday Courses

Abingdon Swim School – Swimming Intensives

Girls and boys aged 4-11 years

Our five-day swim courses are aimed at speeding up children’s swimming progress and development. These courses are ideal for boosting children’s swimming skills and increase their confidence in and around the water – as well as being a fun and productive way of filling up holiday time!

Courses are £46.25 per week, per 30 minute sessions

Additional Two-Day High Performance Rugby Camp

Due to the success of our July camp, we are running an additional two-day camp this year.

Boys: Aged 8-13 years

18-19 October 2018

The cost of this course is £80 for two days.

This is a high-quality, coaching course led by ex-professional players and current academy and county level coaches. Learn and develop existing and new skills, whilst experiencing the day to day life of a profes­sional. Core skills, such as catch and pass, tackle, breakdown, support, back play and set piece play will be covered in a fun, safe and enjoyable environment. This is aimed at participants who are currently playing, or aspiring to play at first team level at their school and clubs.

  • Becoming an elite player
  • Injury prevention
  • Sports nutrition
  • Rugby specific physical conditioning
  • Daily post-training hydrotherapy

An Introduction to Woodwork Skills

Come and learn new skills and enjoy the practical experience of making your own products from the tactile, natural material of wood.

Learn how to use marking out tools and understand the properties of timbers and how to cut and make joints.

The aim is to progress to designing and making beautiful wooden products take home and cherish.

This course is for beginners and anyone that wants to enjoy learning new skills with the lovely, natural material of wood.

Cost: £72

Minimum age: 16 years old.

The course will run every Thursday, 7pm-9pm from 8 November to 13 December 2018.

Junior Taster Sessions

Girls and boys aged 5-15 years.

Our taster sessions are group based activities, designed to give an introduction into the world of climbing. Whilst focusing on enjoyment, your instructor will teach climbing techniques and basic safety skills required to progress in this sport.

Ultimate Activity Camps provide outstanding activity day camps for children ages 4-14 during the school holidays, where the children’s welfare and fun are at the heart of all that they do. Children will enjoy over 40 sports, games and art activities every week, led by engaging staff. Camps run from Monday to Friday – book by the day or week for ultimate flexibility. Ultimate Activity at running camps at both Abingdon and Abingdon Prep, during the school holidays.

Academy of Sport have high quality coaches delivering progressive courses designed to improve players. Their star coaches work with every group, teaching the skills they have perfected, adding another layer of inspiration and an insight into performing at the highest level. Children will learn their chosen academies with new skills and a new enthusiasm for their chosen sport. Academies are run at Tilsley Park.

October holiday courses available:

Hockey academy with elite player or coach

Qualifications and Training

Integrated National Pool Lifeguard Qualification with (with AED)

The NPLQ is a internationally recognised qualification and will cover vital life saving skills, CPR, first aid and pool rescue techniques.

The course will finish no later than 6pm every day, and the day is split into two sessions; theoretical/classroom based activities session and a 2-hour pool session. Each participant will be required to wear shorts and t-shirt whilst in the pool.

You must be 16 years old or older and in good health and fitness to attend this course.

The cost of the course will be £220 and all course materials will be provided. Payment is to be made payable to Abingdon School Enterprises Ltd.

Upon the successful completion of the exam there is the opportunity of working in the sports centre on certain shifts. This qualification is valid for two years.
